Story: Island Matrix is a concise visual comment on Caribbean reality as a construct -- as that which has been coded and programmed by a number of machines, including the colonial plantation system and the tourism industry, among others. The experimental video renders the tropical archipelagic space as composed of a sea of signs that substitute simulacra for real places and peoples. Accompanying the images is a soundscape in the musical genre of dubstep. The wobbling bass and robot 'noises' in the audio contribute to a conversation about the mechanisms at work in fabricating reality and the characteristic distortion in the sound echoes the perversions of island life -- stereotypes and caricatures-- that are widely disseminated and held in the popular imagination.
